Paul was born Oct. 8, 1929, in St. Paul, Minn., to Albert and Bernadine (Kelly) Schaffhausen. He grew up and attended school there, graduating in 1947. He enlisted in the Army after graduation. Upon completion of his enlistment, he started working for the Waldorf Paper Company of St. Paul. Paul was called back to the Army and served during the Korean conflict. After returning home, he went back to work for the Waldorf Paper Company.
He married Barbara (Thomas) Lilly on May 28, 1964. Later in 1964, the company asked him to move to La Crosse, Wis., and start a new plant for them.. Four years later with the company growing, he was asked to move again, this time to Sioux City, where he started the Hoerner-Waldorf plant. Paul continued to work for the company through several more corporate mergers, retiring in 1992 from Smurfit-Stone. After his retirement, the couple started spending winters in Peoria, Ariz., with many of their friends from Sioux City and new friends from across the country.
He was active in the community and served on several area boards, including Little Yellow Dog. He was Past President of the Downtown Rotary Club and Past President of the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce. He helped start Junior Achievement in Sioux City, which he continued to be involved with up until his retirement. Paul also volunteered at the St. Vincent De Paul Society in Phoenix, Ariz.
Paul enjoyed bowling, golf, tennis and was an avid photographer. He took pictures of everything. His greatest joy was his family and meeting new people. Paul was a church usher for 67 years between St. Paul, Minn., Sioux City, and Peoria, Ariz.
