Sioux City - Phil B. Hayes, 90, of Sioux City died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at a Sioux City nursing home
Celebration of life services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Koehler officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Phil was born on Sept. 10, 1923, in Creston, Iowa. He was raised in Villisca, Iowa, and graduated from Villisca High School in 1943. After high school he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine and served in the European Theater during World War II.
On July 7, 1943, he married Opal Hilleary in Washington, D.C. After the service the couple returned to Iowa to make their home. Phil was a salesman for the Lambert Glove Company for 25 years. They moved to Sioux City in 1978, and Phil attended W. I. T., were he earned his stationary plant-engineering license. He was a stationary plant operation engineer at Mercy Medical Center for 22 years, until he retired in 2000. He also worked as the boiler engineer at Morningside Presbyterian Church for 27 years.
Phil enjoyed working, but he also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, cooking and, most of all, spending time with his family
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Opal of Sioux City; three children, Stephen (Chyna) Hayes of Grand Island, Neb., Linda Hagen of Sioux City, and Sharon Whitman of Omaha; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; his sister, Reva Marsh of Gretna, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Alan P.; and seven brothers and sisters.
