Phyllis Evelyn Doran (Irwin)

February 25, 1924 — July 11, 2010

SIOUX CITY -- Phyllis E. Doran, 86, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at a Sioux City assisted living facility.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Koehler officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., in the Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Phyllis was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Sioux City, the daughter of Charles and Jennie (Schaap) Irwin. She was raised in Sioux City and she graduated from East High School in 1942. She then attended Morningside College and graduated in 1947. She earned her master's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1965, and an education specialist in 1971 from the University of South Dakota.

On June 13, 1944, she married Gene Doran in Sioux City. She was a teacher and principal in Homer, Neb., from 1950 to 1963 and she taught at East Junior from 1963 to 1964. Phyllis was the assistant principal at D.A. Hayworth Jr. High School from 1964 to 1980 and at the Woodrow Wilson Middle School from 1980 to 1988. She retired in 1988.

She was a lifetime member of Morningside Presbyterian Church, and was the first baby to be baptized in the church. She served as a deacon at the church. She was the moderator of the Women Association and served in all the offices of the Christodelphians. Phyllis served as president of the Morningside Alumni Association from 1971 to 1972. She also received the distinguished alumni award. Phyllis served on St. Luke's Auxiliary board of directors and was a member of Chapter JG, PEO, Quota Club, and Miercoles Study Club. She was a member of the board of directors for the Mary J. Treglia Community House.

She is survived by her husband, Gene; beloved daughter-in-law, Sally Doran; three grandchildren, Leslie Nelson, Mollie Crace and Phillip Doran; eight great-grandchildren, Skyler, Scarlet, Soren, Sage, Stellen and Sloan Nelson, Kieran Crace, Halle Doran; her brother and his wife, Chuck and Angie Irwin; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Capt. Douglas Doran; her sister, Harriet Wilberu; and her brother, William Irwin.

A memorial has been established in her name for the Morningside Presbyterian Church or the Care Initiatives Hospice.
