SIOUX CITY -- Phyllis "Irish" Guthrie, 82, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.
Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Monsignor Roger Augustine officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., Larkin Chapel, Christy Smith Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent at

Phyllis "Irish" Mary Keogh was born Sept. 3, 1928, in Limerick, Ireland, to Christopher and Christine (Hickman) Keogh. She attended and graduated from high school in Ireland before moving to Elkhart, Iowa, in 1952.
Phyllis and John Albert Guthrie were married Feb. 11, 1956, in Elkhart. She and John moved to St. Louis, Mo., in 1958, to Stuart, Iowa, in 1971 and to Sioux City in 1988.
Phyllis was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church since moving to Sioux City. She was an active member of AA for nearly 22 years and helped many others in the program.
Phyllis was an avid walker and was known to many in Sioux City as the "Irish Walker." She walked more than 10 miles per day for many years until her health declined.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Bryan and his wife, Tracey, of Waterloo, Iowa; her daughter, Maureen and special friend, Andrew Rigney, of Sioux City; and nine grandchildren, John, Robert, Alex, Patrick, Samuel, Steven, Andrew, Sarah and Daniel, all of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1985; and a daughter, Theresa in 1992.
