ANTHON, Iowa -- Phyllis (Hane) Dunnington, 89, rural Anthon died Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Moville United Methodist Church in Moville, Iowa. The Rev. Ed Frank will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery, Moville. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville.
Phyllis was the last of seven children born to Andrew and Nora (Conaway) Hane on Sept. 10, 1922, on the family farm south of Moville. She grew up on the farm and attended country schools. In 1939, she graduated from Climbing Hill (Iowa) High School. She and her sister, Peg, were close in age and remained close their entire lives. Phyllis had a work ethic like none other. If she wasn't tilling the soil, milking the cows or doing yard work, she wasn't happy.
On Jan. 13, 1941, she married Winfield Dunnington in Dakota City. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to California where Winfield worked as a sandblaster on many projects. After the birth of their first child they decided to return to Iowa and farm. It was what they loved doing. After several moves, they purchased a farm north and west of Anthon that she still lived on. Winfield passed away on Feb. 1, 1999 and she refused to leave the farm.
She enjoyed her home and mowing her lawn. She especially enjoyed going to the Argosy for entertainment.
She leaves behind a son, Mark (Shari) of Olathe, Kan.; two daughters, Sandra (Roger) Petersen of Sioux City, and Sherry (Armand) Roepke of Kingsley, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Stacie, Donna, Cathy, Lisa, Britt, Devyn and Dennis; two stepgrandchildren, Kim and Jeff; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Lucille Steffe and Peg Dykstra; four brothers, Clayton, Virgil, Philip and Frank Hane; and a grandson, Andrew Nelson.
