MOVILLE, Iowa -- Phyllis Ann Hons-Schmidt, 87, of Sioux City, formerly of Moville, died Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Moville, with the Rev. Mark J. Stoll officiating. Private family graveside services will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Kingsley, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Phyllis was born Sept. 18, 1922, in Manning, Iowa, the daughter of Lester "Jack" and Pearl (Franzwa) West. She attended school in Manning until the family moved to Kingsley, Iowa, in 1938. She graduated from Kingsley High School in June 1940.
She married Max Hons on June 9, 1950, in Kingsley. The couple lived in Kingsley for a short time before moving to Moville. Max died in 1965, near Kingsley.
She married Verlyn Schmidt on June 23, 1976, in Moville. The couple lived on a farm near Moville.
She was employed as a postal clerk for the U.S. Post Office for many years. She also owned and operated Phyl's Variety Store for a number of years.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Moville. She was a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America in Moville. She made many quilts and other articles of threaded needle works. She enjoyed playing cards and played in a Euchre club for 20 years. She also enjoyed reading and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Verlyn Schmidt of Moville; three daughters, Diane and Charles Ashley of Moville, Nancy and Tim Weaver of Moville and Jeannine Hons of Kirkland, Wash.; a son and his wife, Mark and Michelle Hons of West Liberty, Iowa; a stepdaughter and her husband, Sherry and Randy Beaver of Moville; a stepson, Rick Schmidt of Moville; two sisters, LaMorne Schirtz of Galesburg, Ill., and Carol Park of Scranton, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six great-stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; two brothers, Jack and Merle West; and a granddaughter, Michelle Wood.
Pallbearers will be Eric Wood, Scott Ashley, Zachary Weaver and Max Hons.
