SIOUX CITY -- Pius Gruber, 92, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, due to a massive stroke.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present at 6 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to

Mr. Gruber was born April 2, 1919, in Elsass, Kutschurgan, Russia, to Franz Josef and Katharina (Eberle) Gruber. He was raised in Elsass and graduated from the University of Odessa and became the county auditor.
He married Leonida Klein on April 2, 1940. He was drafted into the German Army and separated from his wife and son, Pius, during this time. After the war, they were reunited when the Red Cross got his family out of East Germany. The family arrived in America on May 5, 1952, settling in Rapid City, S.D. and became citizens in 1957. In the United States, he worked in highway construction and for the South Dakota Cement Plant until retiring in 1980. He and Leonida moved to Sioux City in 2001, to be closer to family.
He loved gardening, cross-stitch and making peanut brittle for everyone.
Survivors include his sons, Pius B. and Miriam Gruber and Frank J. and Diane Gruber; two grandchildren, Brian and Mary; a great-grandson, Hayden; a sister, Rosa, in Germany; and nieces, nephews, and many cousins in Germany.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years; two sisters; and a brother.
