Sioux City - Rachel Mae Tolles, 94, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Sunrise Retirement Community.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Koehler officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Rachel was born on Dec. 1, 1918, in Sioux City, the daughter of George and Elma (Fels) Perley. She attended school in Sioux City and graduated from East High School in 1937.
Rachel married Howard Tolles on July 25, 1942. They made their home in California during the war, returning to Sioux City in 1947. Rachel worked at Mikkelsens Pharmacy as the fizzician at the soda fountain for more than 13 years. Howard died on April 19, 1979.
Rachel was an active member of Morningside Presbyterian Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher, deacon and was active with the women’s ministries. She attended the National Presbyterian Women’s Conference at Purdue, Ind. She enjoyed tatting, knitting and crocheting. For the first time, at the age of 91, Rachel entered a tatting doily at the Woodbury County Fair and received grand champion.
Survivors include her daughters, Elaine and Ed Divis of Sioux City, and Marilyn and Scott Larson of Lino Lakes, Minn; a daughter-in-law, Marcia Tolles of Hartford, S.D.; 10 grandchildren, Tim Tolles, Tracy and Helga Tolles, Laurie Chamberlin, Amy and Andy McGinn, Kate and Chris Nelson, Tom and Nicki Divis, Jason Dicks, Eric and Jackie Dicks, Angela and Jeremy Grams and AJ Dunphy; 11 great-grandchildren, Terry and Stephanie, Ashley, Joey, Tricia, Erin, Henry, Howie, Thaddeus, Ethan, Ryker and Lucy; and a great-great-grandson, Chase.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; a son, Chester; a daughter, Jeanne Rae; two brothers and their wives, Dick and Virginia Perley and Ivan and Lucile Perley; and two dear sisters-in-law and their husbands, Wilma and Elwin Strong and Mildred and Bill Poelstra and Jake Armentrout.
