SERGEANT BLUFF -- Ray M. Peterson, 88, of Sergeant Bluff passed away Nov. 15, 2011, at a local hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Merrill Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Ray was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Sergeant Bluff, to William and Mina (Fredrickson) Peterson. He graduated from school in Sergeant Bluff and joined the U.S. Air Force. He later returned and attended college. He had been a lifelong resident of the Sergeant Bluff area.
He married Josephine Crooks on July 30, 1953, in Elk Point, S.D. He was employed with the 185th Tactical Fighter Group for 39 years, one month and 11 days.
He was a former member of Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff. Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, and sports, especially basketball and football (he was on the 1940 Sergeant Bluff basketball team that made it to the state tournament). He also enjoyed just being outside.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine; a son, Ron and Renee Peterson of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter, Ann and Scott Leonard of Milford, Mich.; three grandsons, Josh, Billy and Brandon; four granddaughters, Alix, Brittany, Amanda and Stephanie; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carol Houchins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dora Buchanan; and a brother, Donald Peterson.
