SIOUX CITY -- Raymond "Ray" Denham, 102, of Sioux City, formerly of Battle Creek, Iowa, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009, at his residence after a good long life.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with Harold Youtzy Jr. of the Gospel Mission officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Ida Grove Cemetery, Ida Grove, Iowa. Visitation will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a time of sharing at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Ray was born Nov. 27, 1906, in a log cabin in Pulaski County, Ky., near Somerset, to James H. and Ollie (Silvers) Denham. He attended country school, then cared for his younger sisters following his mother's death. Through his life, he worked on farms, at a saw mill, then various jobs in Cincinnati, Ohio. After coming to Iowa, he became a skilled carpenter and mason, running his own crew for years.
He married Martha Miller of Ida Grove, Iowa, on July 12, 1931. She passed away in 1945 in Battle Creek, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. He continued to live in Battle Creek and raised his family there. On June 12, 1965, he married Lois F. Harrison Foster in Sioux City. They moved to their present home in April 1970. The McGregor family has been helping with his care for the last three years.
He was a Christian and enjoyed reading his Bible as long as he was able. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. He was a faithful husband, a good father, loving grandfather and a true friend.
He is survived by his wife, Lois of Sioux City; three daughters, Lillian Wilson of Odebolt, Iowa, Lois Segerstrom of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Alice (Dwight) Masters of Mapleton, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Sue Denham Jordt of Iowa City, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Virginia (Don) McGregor of rural Moville, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Steve Wilson, Sherry Dockweller, Tracy Curley, Terry Wilson, Marcy Garrison, Vicky Krieger, Lynn Segerstrom, Debra Denham, Lori Jarrett, Lane Segerstrom, Scott Masters, Thomas Masters, Luanne Nakasawi and Lorne Segerstrom; two stepgrandchildren, Donita and Douglas McGregor; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; two half brothers, James (Mary Ann) Denham Jr. and Harry (Betty) Denham, both of Peru, Ind.; two half sisters, Beatrice Hollars of Muncie, Ind., and Norma Jean Montgomery of Somerset, Ky.; sisters-in-law, Leona Denham of Joplin, Mo., and Lydia Miller of Ida Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; a son, James; his parents; his stepmother; three brothers; four sisters; four half brothers; a son-in-law; and an infant granddaughter.
