Raymond Raymond "Ray" Guthridge

December 25, 1919 — July 18, 2008

MOVILLE, Iowa -- Raymond "Ray" Guthridge, 88, of Moville passed away on Friday, July 18, 2008, at Correctionville Nursing & Rehab in Correctionville, Iowa.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Moville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery at Moville. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville.

A lifelong Moville resident, Ray graduated from Moville High School in 1938. Following high school, he was in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) until he went to work at the Woodbury County REA in 1939. Ray entered the U.S. Army in 1942, and was a staff sergeant in the 997th Signal Service Corps, serving 34 months in New Guinea. He earned a Bronze Star and was honorably discharged in November 1945.

Upon returning to Moville, he married Margie Plumer of Lawton, Iowa, and together they raised four children. Ray continued his career at the Woodbury County REA and after 45 years, retired in 1984, as a line superintendent. Over the years, Ray enjoyed bowling, water-skiing, fishing, golfing, camping and traveling with family and friends.

Ray actively volunteered his time in many community service activities including being instrumental in building the ball diamonds on the north end of Moville, the ice-skating rink on the park tennis courts for several winters and installing football field lights in several surrounding communities. He also served as a member of the Moville volunteer fire department for more than 30 years, served as a town councilman for several years and taught first-aid classes for the Red Cross.

Ray was an active member of the Moville United Methodist Church, serving on various committees as well as singing in the choir. He was a 60-year member of the Winks Sparks American Legion Post 303, a 50-plus year member of Trial Lodge 532, Moville and a Scottish Rite Freemason. He was also a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine and sang with the Chanters. The highlight of his Chanter experience was participating in a performance at Royal Albert Hall in London, England.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Guthridge of Moville; children and their spouses, Cindy and Don Lahr of Fishers, Ind., Greg and Sandra Guthridge of Granby, Colo., Cristy and Duane Kikkert of Charlotte, N.C., and Stuart and Mary Lou Guthridge of Moville; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Earline Hunting of Moville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Edna (Sanderson) Guthridge; and sisters, Ruth Peterson and Angie Rounds.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the family at P.O. Box 182, Moville, IA. Donations will be used to help fund a special project at the Correctionville Nursing Home and the remainder donated to the Shriner's Children's Hospital.
