Raymond John Winneke

SIOUX CITY -- Raymond John Winneke, 92, of Sioux City died Thursday, March 18, 2010, at Sunrise Retirement Community.
Services will be noon Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Valeri Heller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with Chaplain Jon Moravec officiating, at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Raymond was born Aug. 15, 1917, on the family farm near Castana, Iowa, the son of Theodore and Jo Hannah (Pederson) Winneke. He grew up in the Mapleton, Iowa, area, where he graduated from Mapleton High School in 1937. While in high school, he worked for the Mapleton Board of Education. He then entered the U.S. Navy and served from 1942 to 1945.
He married Alice M. Cooper on Oct. 7, 1945, in Moville, Iowa. After the service, he went to work for the city of Mapleton as an electrician at the Municipal Light Plant. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1947. He took the position of superintendent of buildings and grounds at Morningside College. He worked there from July 1947 until his retirement in September 1980.
He was presented the Order of Morningside Award for his years of service in 1980. He was a 50-plus year member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge of Mapleton. He spent 16 years as treasurer of the Scout Troop 221 at Grace United Methodist Church. He was a 75-year member of the Royal Neighbors and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed tinkering around the house.
Survivors include his wife, Alice M. of Sioux City; a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Kris Winneke of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold Winneke; and a sister, Irene Reilly.
Pallbearers will be Jim Cooper, Jason Allyn, Jeff Jaacks, David Cooper, Bob Brady and Tom Kvidera.
A memorial in his name had been established at Morningside College.
