Richard G. Betz, 85, of Sioux City died on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. The Rev. Patrick Behn will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 p.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Richard was born on Jan. 21, 1929, in Sioux City, the son of Robert and Emily (Hayes) Betz. He lived in Sioux City most of his life. Richard attended Catholic schools until he joined the National Guard during World War II. After the service, he returned to Sioux City and did construction work. He later worked at Armour Packing Plant in Sioux City.
He was a member of Cathedral of the Epiphany. Richard was an avid walker and a Sioux City historian. He especially enjoyed reading about the Missouri River and the history of the area. He also enjoyed painting.
He is survived by his brother, Robert (Alicia) Betz of San Antonio, Texas; his cousin, Mary Elaine O’Hara of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews, Barbra Ann (Michael) Swanson of Sioux City, Kevin Betz and Gary Mulder of Van Cover, Wash., Mary (Brad) Howard of McCook Lake, S.D., Bill Betz of Sioux City, Tom (Julie) Betz of Sioux City, and Bob Thompson of Sioux City; and his Hallmark Care Center Family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister in law, Bill and Marilyn Betz; and his niece, Patty Thompson.
