LAWTON, Iowa -- Richard John "Dick" Monk, 81, of Lawton died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, with the Rev. Cyndy Ripperger officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Richard was born in Oto, Iowa, July 17, 1930, to Simeon And Margaret (Pithan) Monk. He graduated from Leeds High School in 1949. He served in the Air Force Reserves and the Iowa Air National Guard from November 1950 to November 1953.
He was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton. He was also an active member of the Lawton American Legion Post 718. Richard enjoyed hunting and fishing, along with helping family and neighbors. He also enjoyed playing cards, woodworking and gardening.
Survivors include three sons, Gary and Crystal Monk of Vermillion, S.D., Mike and Connie Monk of Lincoln, Neb., and James and Traci Monk of Hugo, Minn.; one daughter, Debra Van Diemen of South Sioux City; four stepchildren, Karen and Ted Mammen of Correctionville, Iowa, Lorna and Randy Dunkelberger of Moville, Iowa, Lois Ouellette of Sioux City, and Kenny and Marie Hayworth of Correctionville; five brothers, Larry, Gene, Claude "Clem," Roger and Terry; five sisters, Loretta, Harriett, Flosie, Emaline, and Donna Mae; 18 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vesta, in 1998; four brothers, Wayne, Chuck, Earl and Raymond; and two sisters, Mary Lois and Laverne.
