Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Friday, December 9, 2022, at Holy Cross Parish-St. Michael Catholic Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, December 8, 2022, at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Larkin Chapel, 2320 Outer Drive N, with a Masonic service at 5:00 pm and a Prayer service at 6:00 pm. Richard Ray “Dick” Sams, the son of Harold and Esther (Harris) Sams was born March 29, 1941, in Sioux City, IA. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1959 until 1962. On March 24, 1962,
Dick was united in marriage with Judith “Judy” Lefler in Sioux City. He worked as an Engineer at East High School, retiring in 2003.
Dick was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. He also was a Shriner for 25 years, belonging to many units including the Clowns. Dick is survived by his wife, Judy; children, Debora Sams Illian, Susan Rae (Gareth) Allen, Luke Thomas Sams; grandchildren, Audrey Desisto, Alden Avery, and Danielle Illian; great-grandchildren, Hazel, Hayden, and Ava; nephews, Steve (Andrea) Sams, Keith (Jan) Sams, Brian (Darla) Sams, Kim (Susie) Dwyer, Kirk (Tracey) Dwyer; and a niece, Dawn Southwick. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cindy in 1969; son-in-law, Mark Illian; nephews, David Sams, Jeff Dwyer, and Cody Sams; siblings, Leland (Marilyn) Sams and Barbara (Jerry) Dwyer; and a nephew, Doug Southwick.
