Richard was born on Sept. 2, 1933, in Council Grove, Kan., to I.L. and Reva Faye (Jones) Galloway. The family moved to Carroll and later Sac City, Iowa. As a young boy, Rich developed his love of baking while working in his family's bakery, the Wigwam Bakery in Sac City. He graduated from Sac City High School, where he held several track records for many years and met the love of his life, in 1953.
Rich married Maxine Lents on Aug. 7, 1954, in Sac City and left for the U.S. Army boot camp a short 10 days later. One day after completing his military service in 1956, he accompanied a friend who was registering for classes to Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., and ended up coming home a registered student himself to the surprise of his wife. Rich graduated from Wayne State College and later earned his master's degree in administration from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. After graduating from Wayne State, he began his teaching career in Westfield, Iowa, before going to Westwood CSD in Sloan, Iowa. Rich taught industrial arts throughout his 30-plus years in education and became assistant principal. He also instructed driver's education and coached junior high girls basketball and track. Rich truly enjoyed his many years at Westwood before retiring in 1994.
During their 60 years of marriage, the couple was blessed with five children, Nancy, Joni, Julie, Brian and Keith.
Rich was an excellent craftsman. His family and friends were the lucky recipients of many beautiful woodworking projects his passion brought to life. Rich was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Denver, Iowa, and a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville. He was also a member of the Hornick American Legion Post.
Rich's hobbies included woodworking, traveling, fishing, shopping with his wife, baking, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their activities. He was an avid sports fan for all the Iowa college teams.
Rich is survived by his wife, Maxine of Cedar Falls; children, Nancy and her husband, Mike Gorshe of Denver, Iowa, Joni and her husband, Mike Weaver of Moville, Julie and her husband, Marty Heck of Moville, Brian Galloway of Munich, Germany, and Keith Galloway and his wife, Lynn of Waterloo, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Jim Galloway and his wife, Teresa of Fresno, Calif., and Don Galloway and his wife, Cynthia of Eveleth, Minn.
