Sioux City - Richard J. Johnson, 78, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at his residence.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lorna Peters officiating. Burial will be in Pocahontas Cemetery, Pocahontas, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Richard was born on May 21, 1934, in Pocahontas, the son of Walter and Florence (Eaton) Johnson.
He married Carol Culver on Nov. 5, 1955, in Sioux City. They were later divorced. Over the years, Richard worked for the U.S. Post Office, IDS Investments and Sioux City Parks and Recreation.
He was a past member of the Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa, and an active member of the Elks Lodge and the Center For Active Generations. Richard enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking, crossword puzzles, golfing, fishing, playing cards and was a Hawkeye and Husker fan.
Survivors include two sons, Rick Johnson of Elk Point, S.D., and Randy and Mary Ann Johnson of Sioux City; three daughters, Cheri Harder of Sioux City, Juli Groen of Sioux City, and Brenda Hanson of Milford, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Carissa Alvarez, Ryan Johnson, Noah Johnson, Nicole Johnson, Gregory Harder, Peter Johnson, Jenny Harder, Dallas Groen, Cain Hanson, Elli Hanson and Tyce Hanson; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a special friend, Dee Sachau and family of Sioux City; two sisters, Virginia and Don McEnany of Waverly, Iowa, and Grace Martin of Atlantic, Iowa; and three sisters-in-law, Joyce Johnson of Minneapolis, Sharon Johnson of Grand Island, Neb., and Sally Johnson of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Wally, Bobby, Don and Paul.
The family is grateful for the services of Hospice of Siouxland, especially his nurse, Veronica.
