Richard V. Jonas, 79, of Sioux City, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. The family requests that funeral attendees dress casually.
Richard Vincent Jonas, the son of Walter and Althea (Cressey) Jonas, was born on March 1, 1938, in Sioux City. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1956.
On Sept. 27, 1957, Richard was united in marriage with Bonnie Crawford in Pipestone, Minn. He worked as an elevator mechanic for various elevator companies for 30 years. Richard was then employed as the state elevator inspector in California. He retired in 2000.
Richard was a member of Siouxland Center for Active Generations and the Good Sam Camping Club. He was also a very talented woodcarver, and belonged to the Northwest Iowa Woodcarvers.
Richard is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Sioux City; his children, Vicki Lynn (Randy) Dokken of Sioux City, Cindy (Dan) Schultz of Sioux Falls, S.D., Valerie (Guy) Counterman of Sioux City, and Phillip (Liz) Jonas of Sioux City; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six sisters; three brothers; two foster sons, John Pille and Jeff Mahlberg; his beloved dog, Cinder; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.
The family has requested that memorials be directed to the Siouxland Center for Active Generations.
