NORTH SIOUX CITY | Richard L. Merryman, 81, of North Sioux City passed away Oct. 11, 2012, at Westwood Nursing and Rehab in Sioux City, after a short illness.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tanya Sherrill of Riverside United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home.
Richard was born on Feb. 21, 1931, in Sioux City, to Everett and Lydia (Lowry) Merryman. He attended Sioux City schools and later obtained his G.E.D. in the U.S. Army. He served in the Army Artillery in Germany during the Korean conflict from 1951 to 1953. He had resided in the Sioux City area his entire life.
On May 26, 1953, he married Laurel J. Blackburn. She passed away Nov. 22, 2003, in Sioux City. Richard was employed with Zenith Corporation as a plant supervisor until the plant closed. Later, he was a security guard for AGP and Terra Chemical, both here in Siouxland.
Richard played American Legion Baseball from 1946 to 1948 with one league championship. He later played semi pro ball from 1949 to 1951 for Randolph, Neb. He enjoyed golf and won many tournaments throughout Siouxland and on the West Coast. He was a St. Louis Cardinals fan and spent many hours fishing.
Survivors include his nieces and nephews, Sherry and Rex Whitney and Tammie and Duane Cory, all of Sioux City, Larry and Clara Merryman and Charles and Candy Merryman, all of Sergeant Bluff, Diane Coulter, Roger Merryman and Farrel Merryman, all of Sioux City, and Tina and Dan Herfel of South Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two brothers, Charles and Clayton Merryman; a sister, Edith Mahnke; and one niece, Cindy Piester.
