Sioux City—PFC Richard C. Petersen Jr., 21, of Sioux City died overseas last week while serving with the U.S. Army.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with Chaplain Merrill Muller of the 185th Air Refueling Wing officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to

Richard was born Nov. 9, 1987, in Fairfield, Calif., the son of Richard Sr. and Tammy (Lewellen) Petersen. He had lived in Sioux City, Lincoln, Neb., Alabama and moved back to Sioux City about the time he entered the military. He was currently serving with the U.S. Army in Korea.
He married Sara Reyes on Feb. 13, 2007, in Lincoln, Neb.
He is survived by his wife, Sara; a son, Julian; his father and stepmother, Richard and Sarah Petersen of Sioux City; his mother and stepfather, Tammy and Colin Runyan of Vacaville, Calif.; two sisters, Terri and Matthew Holchstein serving in the U.S. Military in Guam, and Amber Petersen of Allen, Neb.; maternal grandmother, Teresa Crunk of Allen, Neb.; paternal grandparents, Gerald and Polly Petersen of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by grandfathers, Gary Lewellen and Terry Maxie; and an uncle, Charles Petersen.
