He graduated from East High School in 1945, where he participated in debate, the school newspaper, student council and was a state track champion at the Drake Relays.
Dick served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the Navy, he attended the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. While at USD, he served as president of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He went on to attend law school at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and earned his juris doctorate. While attending the University of Iowa, he met and later married his wife, Jean. He was a member of the Iowa Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Dick and his wife, Jean, spent many memorable summers with their family at their lake cottage on Lake Pickerel, S.D. They were also part of the Rhine-Stone Theater with Don and Jean Stone and other area couples where they had lots of fun putting on comedy skits similar to the show Laugh-In.
