Richard Roy Schoening, 89, passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at a local nursing home in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at 11:00 am at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel (1801 Morningside Ave.) with a visitation taking place one hour prior. His final resting place will be Graceland Park Cemetery.
Richard was born on April 4, 1935, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Earl and Leona (Miller) Schoening. He attended country schools and graduated from Glenwood Iowa High School in 1953. Following graduation, Richard farmed before moving to Sioux City, Iowa. Once in the city, he worked as a cattle buyer at Sioux City Dressed Beef/Needham Packing Company.
Richard joined the Army Reserve from 1957 to 1963. He trained at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri and earned the marksmanship rank of sharpshooter. On October 4, 1958, Richard married Carol Edgerton in Valley, Nebraska. After his service, the couple made their home in Sioux City, Iowa, then in Lawton, Iowa, before returning to Sioux City in 2017. During this time, Richard resumed working in the meat processing industry, operating as foreman and hog buyer with companies such as Sioux Quality Packers, Armour & Co., and Swift & Co. Prior to his retirement, Richard worked as a courier for Velocity Express.
Richard was a member of Landmark Lodge Sioux City, Sioux City Scottish Rite, Abu-Bekr Shriners, and St. Luke Lutheran Church. In his free time, Richard loved fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling with friends, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His favorite sports teams were the Nebraska Huskers and the Chicago Cubs.
Richard is survived by his wife, Carol Schoening of Sioux City; son, Lynn (Kelli) Schoening of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter, Sandy (Joe) Yocum of South Sioux City, Nebraska; sister, Janice (Darrell) Downing of Stillwater, Oklahoma; granddaughters, Erin (Brad) Roepke, Kara (Zeke) Hollaren, Kendra (Jeff) Sherman, Kate Schoening; great-grandsons, Blake Roepke, Brooks Roepke, Bryson Roepke, Nolan Hollaren, and Emmett Hollaren; a niece; nephews; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, La Von Schoening and Lawrence Schoening; grandparents; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
