SALIX, Iowa -- Robert "Bob" J. Fiala, 80, of Salix died suddenly on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at McAllen Medical Center in McAllen, Texas.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Clint Loveall of Spirit Lake Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., with Lorna Peters officiating, at the funeral home. Robert John Fiala was born on Jan. 21, 1931, in Sioux City, Iowa, to John and Julia (Soukup) Fiala. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Sioux City schools.
On May 4, 1952, he married Dorothy Smith of Bronson, Iowa. He worked as a truck driver for over 30 years for firms including Sioux City Furniture, Tri-State Trucking, King Transfer and Hyman Freight. He retired in 1981.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union and past president of the Retired Teamsters Club. Bob enjoyed reading, watching baseball (Minnesota Twins), gardening and long rides in the country on his motorcycle. He also loved tinkering in the garage and assisting family members with their projects.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan Johannsen of Denver, Colo., Vickie Fiala and her husband, Bob Taylor of Ashburn, Va., and Laura Behrens of Sioux City; one son, John and Cindy Fiala of McKinney, Texas; three grandchildren, Mike Behrens and Rachel Behrens of Vienna, Va., and Brandon Fiala of Rio Rancho, N.M.; one brother, Larry Fiala of Sioux City; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betty Hummel Gunn.
Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
