Lawton, Iowa - Robert Loren Gerking of Lawton died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City. The Rev. Armand Bertrand will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Albaton, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Robert was born on Nov. 21, 1935, in Sioux City, the son of Henry and Kathryn (Davis) Gerking. He was raised on a farm in the Albaton area and graduated from Whiting (Iowa) High School in 1953. After high school, he served with the U.S. Army in Japan. After the service, he attended Wayne State College.
On Jan. 4, 1960, he married Mary Ellen Dugan in Omaha. After their marriage, they lived in Omaha and Robert worked for Swift & Co., they then moved to York, Neb., where he worked for General Dynamics. In 1962, they moved to Lawton and he worked as an accountant for the Sioux City Stockyards for 40 years until he retired in 2002.
Robert was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and I.C. Men’s Club. He belonged to the American Legion Post 718 of Lawton. Robert was an avid collector and was a member of the Red Wing Collectors Society and Fort Dodge Collector Society. He had a large collection of Sioux City Stockyards memorabilia. Robert also served on the Lawton-Bronson School Board. Bob's grandchildren loved him and he adored them. He traveled countless miles over the years rarely missing a school activity or athletic event they were involved in. His faith, his family and his friends were the core of his life and he will be truly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen of Lawton; three sons, Mark of Sioux City, Todd (Jill) of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Tom of Sloan, Iowa; four grandchildren, Rachel, Jordi, Allison and Jake; and two brothers, Will (Janel) Gerking of Sioux City and Richard (Rita) Gerking of rural Bronson, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial may be given in his name to June E. Nylen Cancer Center or Immaculate Conception Education Fund.
