SIOUX CITY -- Robert E. "BooBoo" Ouellette, 83, of Sioux City died early Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Dan Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. BooBoo was born May 7, 1926, in Burbank, S.D., the son of Earl and Emma (Hebert) Ouellette. In his early years, the family moved around to several cities in South Dakota. After helping his father on the farm for several years, he entered the military, serving with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines.
He was married to Mary Amelia Jones on Nov. 25, 1948, in South Sioux City. The couple moved to Sioux City around 1950. Mary preceded him in death. He then married Vivian Johnson Tighe in August 1976. In Sioux City, he worked for Armour Packing Co. and Swift and Co. for many years, retiring from Swift in 1984. During this time, he also was a mechanic for Rupperts Garage.
He raced stock cars and motorcycles for many years in the area. He was a member of the Sioux City Motorcycle Club (Harley-Davidson Club). He enjoyed playing bingo and taking care of his garden and apple trees.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian; four sons, Leonard and Victoria of Des Moines, David and Debra of South Sioux City, Bill and Rachel of Sioux City and Jim Ouellette of Sioux City; two daughters, Carol Bennett of Newcastle, Neb., and Kathy and Greg Garton of Sioux City; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Darlene and Donald Dickinson of Henderson, Nev., Dorothy and Paul Rush of Torrance, Calif., Joyce Schmidt of Tea, S.D., Karen and Virgil Hewitt of Hartford, S.D., and Karlyn and Duane Seney of Hartford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Doris Keehn and Betty Schonrock; and a brother, Don Ouellette.
