Roger L. Zunker

Roger L. Zunker, 70, of Sioux City died Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at a Sioux City hospital.
The family is having a celebration in memory of Roger’s life at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at Sergeant Bluff American Legion, 901 Topaz Dr., with a lunch to follow. Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements.
Roger was born Sept. 9, 1944, at Mauston, Wis., the son of George and Laura (Waller) Zunker. He graduated from high school in St. Paul, Minn. Roger continued his education in Seward, Neb. He joined the U.S. Army in 1965 and served during the Vietnam War. Roger was united in marriage to Edith "Edye" Harnish on Oct. 1, 1968, in Winchester, Kan. She has since passed away. Roger married Lois Behrens in August of 1997. Together they lived in Houston, Texas, until his retirement.
Roger worked for Central United Life Insurance for over 30 years, retiring seven years ago. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, specifically daytime trips to see places he had never been and visiting his children and siblings.
In 2011, Roger again settled in Sioux City and spent his days being an active grandparent. He enjoyed running to various sporting events, theatrical performances, family picnics, fishing trips and tinkering with things around the house. Roger was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sioux City.
Survivors include four children, Laura (James) Hodgins of Sioux City, Joseph (Jennifer) Zunker of Lawson, Mo., Kathleen (Ronald) Rasmussen of Sioux City and Rebecca (Robert) Curran of Sioux City; James Keith Jones with whom he shared a close family bond; 17 grandchildren; one brother, David Zunker of DeLand, Fla.; and three sisters, Beverly Schneider of Cambridge, Minn., Betty Bartels of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Carol Zunker of Minneapolis, Minn.
He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Edye; sister-in-law, Rita Zunker; and brothers-in-law, Dave Bartels and Bill Schneider.
