SIOUX CITY | Ronald H. Jacobs, 80, of Sioux City passed away Nov. 23, 2012, at a local hospital, surrounded by his family.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at The Church of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, with the Rev. Steven McLoud officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com .
Ron was born Dec. 22, 1931, in Mapleton, Iowa, to Harvey J. and Charlotte A. (McCall) Jacobs. He graduated from Mapleton High School
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in June of 1950 at Omaha, and served in the Korean War. He earned the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Campaign Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. Ron was honorably discharged in March of 1953, having become a corporal. While in the U.S. Army, he participated in the atomic energy testing program.
Ron moved to Sioux City in 1954. He married Dorothy Ann Wilson on June 15, 1956, in Sioux City, and the couple was blessed with three daughters, Janet, Julie and Jean. Ron worked as a machinist at Sioux Tools for 30 years before retiring in 1994. After his retirement, he and Dorothy enjoyed camping at Brown's Lake and various other places, traveling to Lake Havasau and spent many winters as snowbirds in Arizona.
He was an avid walker from the east end of Morningside to the Morningside Post Office, daily weather permitting and when the weather was bad, he would walk the mall. Ron was a lifetime blood donor having donated close to 15 gallons to the blood bank. He also volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House. Ron was a member of Nativity Catholic Church, American Legion 1981 Duane Nelson Post and National Association of Atomic Veterans.
Survivors include three daughters, Janet S. Jacobs of Madison, Wis., Julie A. and Jeff Farris of Ellsworth, Wis., and Jean and Russell Gill of Waterbury, Neb.; three granddaughters, Laura Farris, Amy Muhlhausen and Adije Podebradsky; two great-grandchildren, Julia and Joe Farris; one brother, Harold L. Jacobs of Folsom, Calif.; and one sister, Rita "Alice" Moses of Huntsville, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Dorothy.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Siouxland and the staff at St. Luke's hospital for taking such great care of their dad.
