SIOUX CITY -- Ronald E. Thompson, 80, of Sioux City passed away Monday, March 15, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Neil Peck officiating. Private family graveside services will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Ronald was born Oct. 24, 1929, in Sioux City, to Arthur and Vione (Boggess) Thompson. He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1948. Ronald and Marlene Miller were married July 30, 1954 in Onawa, Iowa.

He was employed with Smurfit Stone Container Corp. for 44 years, retiring in 1992. He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City, but also wintered and golfed in Arizona.

He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Morningside Country Club, Southern Hills Country Club, Whispering Creek Golf Course, Morningside Lodge 615, Abu Bekr Shrine and a social member of the White Horse Mounted Patrol. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, time with family and friends, reading, sports of all kinds and socializing.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene of Sioux City; daughter, Kim and Bill Thompson of Papillion, Neb.; grandchildren, Melissa and Christopher Thompson; a sister, Joyce and Larry Kochen of Omaha; a sister-in-law, Marilyn McCarville; a cousin, Don and Loni Hillman; and nieces and nephews, Shelly and Rick Rodgers, Dan and Dot McCarville, Craig and Lori Kochen, Eric Kochen, and Lori and Tim Mueller.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Gene.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland, White Horse Mounted Patrol, or Abu Bekr Transportation Fund.
