Roy A. Barker, 86, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at Westwood Nursing and Rehab Center.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a prayer vigil at 7 p.m., at the church. Roy Andrew Barker was born on Sept. 4, 1922, to William A. and Lida (Chasteen) Barker in Indianapolis. Roy graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis in 1940. He took some drafting courses at Purdue University and worked for Indiana Gear Works as a draftsman prior to going into the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served from 1942 to 1945 as a gunner on a B-17 and as a flight instructor. On Feb. 14, 1946, Roy and Lois Maxine Smith were married in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City.
Roy was a 50-plus-year member of Local 948 Carpenter's Union and worked for various contractors in the Sioux City area. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Legion of Mary Fatima Group, Elk Point Legion Post 1341 and the Siouxland Gem and Mineral Society. He enjoyed going on fishing and rock hunting trips with his family. Roy had his own rock shop, made his own jewelry and had a hobby of rock polishing. He never missed his grandchildren's ballgames or other sporting activities. He was also an avid bicycler and raced bikes and midget race cars in Indianapolis as a younger man.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; sons, Rodney A. of Vermillion, S.D., Randy A. and wife, Nancy of Sioux City, and Rory A. and fiancee, Carol Bligh of Sioux City; grandchildren, Roy A. Barker II, Sonja Barker, Brett A. Barker, Leah Ackerman, Mary Adams, Coleman Barker and Ceith Barker; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Helen Barker; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Albert, Mabel and Gilbert.
Pallbearers will be Roy A. Barker II, Brett A. Barker, Cole Barker, Ceith Barker, Bob Smith and Scott Smith.
