Ruby Evelyene Areman (Brent)

SERGEANT BLUFF -- Ruby E. Areman, 99, of Montrose, Colo., formerly of Sergeant Bluff, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at Heidi's Chateau in Montrose.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Janice Bennett of Riverside United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Ruby Evelyene Brent was born on March 4, 1908, at her family's farm home near Alton, Kan., and spent much of her childhood there. She later moved to Iowa with her parents, two brothers and two sisters. She attended Smithland High School and enjoyed playing on the girls' basketball team until she graduated in 1928.
That fall, Ruby started teaching at a local elementary school and in November married former classmate, Harold Areman. She and Harold had a son, Larry in 1933, and another son, DeLain in 1941. Soon, the Aremans were traveling the mid-South, where Harold worked as an electrician. The family eventually settled in Kansas City, Mo., and Ruby became a mother again at age 45, when she had a daughter, Gloria.
Ruby decided to attend beautician school at the age of 50, and years later, she opened a shop in her home. Fashion Tres was always filled with customers who enjoyed Ruby's friendship as much as they appreciated her beautician skills. Ruby worked into her 80s, when she finally decided to retire and move with Harold back to Iowa to be near family.
Ruby and Harold were married for 69 years until Harold's passing in 1997. Ruby continued living alone until the age of 96, when she made another big move, this time accompanying her son, DeLain and his wife, Martha to Montrose. Ruby enjoyed her mountain view and the opportunity to spend time with her friends and family in Montrose.
Survivors include her son, DeLain Areman and wife, Martha of Montrose; a daughter, Gloria Toler and husband, Tom of Franklin, Tenn.; a sister, Dorothy Philp of Lawton, Iowa; grandchildren, Dr. Greg Areman and wife, Dr. Mandy Areman of Montrose, Bryan Areman and wife, Tracy of Lincoln, Neb., Candice Seng and husband, Chad of Denver, Colo., and Brent Toler and Christopher Toler of Franklin, Tenn.; along with great-grandchildren, J.D., Samantha, Emma, Corey, Allison, Nicholas, Colby, Sage and Willow.
She was preceded in death by her son, Larry Areman; brothers, Donald Brent and Claude Brent; and her sister, Hallie Cook.
