Rubye Elvira Barthel (Krueger)

SIOUX CITY -- Rubye Elvira Barthel, 91, of Sioux City died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at Countryside Retirement Home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Zirpel, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, at Schleswig, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Rubye was born March 25, 1917, in Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Cora (Goodrich) Krueger. She was raised in Schleswig and came to Sioux City in 1943.

She married Richard Barthel on July 7, 1947, in Sioux City. He died on July 28, 1968, in Sioux City. She worked for Cudahy Packing Co. until 1953. She then worked downtown for a couple of years and then went to work at St. Luke's Hospital. She was employed as a cook and retired in 1982.

She was a very active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and belonged to a number of church committees. Rubye was a seamstress and enjoyed sewing. She called square dances with her dad. She also enjoyed going to the casino with her friend, Joe. She drove her own car until 2007. Rubye also helped as a midwife in her early years.

Survivors include her friend, Joe Tschampl of Sioux City; a nephew, John Stoll of Mapleton, Iowa; three step-nephews, Eldon Marvin Nelson, Gordon Lembke and Neil Lembke; and a step-niece, Ella Marie Malone.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Laverne Krueger Nelson.

Pallbearers will be Lee Lambert, Jerry Barth, Jerry Von Ehwegen, Clair Jensen, Mark Fiagle and RoseMary Fiagle.
