Russell A. Brown, 89, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at his residence following a lengthy battle with prostate cancer.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Russell A. Brown was born on March 2, 1924, in Pender, Neb., to Andrew and Mary (Bridgett) Brown. When he was a child, his family moved to Sioux City where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He married Kathleen Arnett on Nov. 9, 1946. He was employed with Cudahy's, the city of Sioux City, and retired from Swifts in 1985. Russell owned Brown's Roofing and worked with many contractors over the years. He liked to keep busy and worked several part-time jobs after he retired.
He enjoyed helping his family with various projects. He enjoyed walking and was famous for riding his bicycle backwards.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen "Katie" Brown; daughters, Bonnie Lester and Lisa and Brian Talbott, all of Sioux City; his sons, Bob and Diane Brown of Sioux City, Dick and Connie Brown of Sioux City, Elson and Tammy Brown of Farmers Branch, Texas, and Bill Brown of Sioux City; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Opal McKenna and Jetta Utter; and brothers, Lloyd and Leonard Brown.
Pallbearers will be Andy Brown, Rich Lester, Cory Brown, Dustin Brown, Travis Brown, Casey Brown, Trevor Talbott and Brice Talbott
