JEFFERSON, S.D. -- Russell D. Sample, 67, of Jefferson passed away Aug. 26, 2011, at a local hospital.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. today at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Jerry Feierfeil officiating. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time today, with the family present at 10 a.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Russell was born July 29, 1944, in Sioux City, the son of Robert and Olive (Petit) Sample. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Sioux City school. He later attended Riverside High School. He served in the U.S. Navy.
On Dec. 28, 1979, he married Eva Sample in Elk Point, S.D. He moved to the Jefferson area in 1979 and had been a resident there ever since. Russell was employed as a motor carrier inspector for the South Dakota Highway Patrol for 15 years.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage, 31, and Texas Hold 'em poker. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR, was a Cubs fan and raced stock cars at Interstate in the early 1970s.
Survivors include his wife, Eva, of Jefferson; children, Bob and Pam Sample of Olathe, Kan., Greg Sample and Keri Hebrink of Sergeant Bluff, Tina and Jim Nieuwendorp of Sheldon, Iowa, and Lee and Shiela Fischer of Raymond, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ron and Robin Sample of Muskogee, Okla.; a sister, Ellen and Ron Bridgett of Sioux City; and a sister-in-law, Julie Sample of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Steve.
