Ruth Knight Kokjohn, 91, of Sioux City died Dec. 31, 2014, after a brief illness.
In accordance with her wishes, no services were held. She was interred on Jan. 4, 2015, in Memorial Park Cemetery. The gravemarker she shares with Walt includes the inscription "To Be Continued," their favorite and often repeated quip. For them and all their many friends may that forecast come true.
She was born in Laurel, Mont., on Oct. 26, 1923, to Richard and Gladys (Carpenter) Knight. She graduated from Fort Madison (Iowa) Public High School.
On Nov. 27, 1941, she married Walter Kokjohn. They moved to Sioux City in 1948 when Walt accepted a faculty position with the Sioux City Community School District. Recognizing a good thing, the couple remained in Sioux City for the rest of their lives. Ruth taught at Morningside Nursery School from 1964 to 1973 and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Ruth lived for more than 57 years in the same home in Morningside. As her eyesight failed she was grateful for the help of her friends, Sharon Dirks, Theo Kelly, Dolly Palmolea, Anne Bergeron and senior companion, Millie Lawrence. When she could no longer stay in her home she was fortunate to find a helpful and caring staff at Northern Hills Retirement Center with the greatest van driver in the world, Kelly. During her days at Northern Hills, she made a number of wonderful and cherished friends including, Orpha Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Kristine (Dan) Schorer of Lakewood, Colo.; and a son, Dr. Tyler (Dr. Katrina) Kokjohn of Phoenix, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of nearly 55 years, Walter; and sister, Phyllis Gray.
