Ruth Jean Quandt

Sioux City - Ruth J. Quandt, 89, of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Russell Senstad and David Zirpel officiating. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery in Climbing Hill, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Ruth was born Aug. 24, 1923, in Sioux City. She was raised in the Riverside area and graduated from Sioux City Central High School.
She moved to Minneapolis and San Francisco, where she worked with Western Union. She returned to Sioux City and worked as a nurse's aide at Lutheran Hospital, where she met Levarn Quandt. They married Sept. 18, 1954, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. After she was married, she operated the elevator in the Commerce Building. Levarn died March 21, 1991, in Sioux City.
She was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church for many years. When she was young, she loved to get rides on motorcycles, and at age 81 she got a ride on Richard's Jet Ski at the lakes. She loved her flowers, especially sunflowers and her Christmas cactus that would bloom every November. She enjoyed the outside and going swimming. Ruth was a people person.
Survivors include her two children, Richard Quandt of Sioux City and Susan Quandt of Sioux City; a sister, Lois (Don) Pearson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Levarn; and a brother, Paul Porepp.
