Ruth Joann (Verlinden) Tarvin, 87, of Sioux City, died peacefully on Feb. 27, 2018, at a local hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, with the Rev. David Koehler officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Ruth was born in Sioux City, on April 4, 1930, the daughter of Benny and Blanche Verlinden. She attended Sioux City Public Schools, graduating from Central High School with the class of 1948. Following her high school education, she attended Morningside College and graduated in 1952. She received her master's degree in humanities from the University of South Dakota in 1963.
Ruth taught English in the Sioux City Community Schools at Central High School from 1960 to 1972. Ruth taught at West High School until her retirement in 1995.
Ruth was a current member of Faith United Presbyterian Church and was previously a member of Third Presbyterian Church. She loved to read mystery novels, attend auctions, cook and buy gifts for her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Guy and his wife, Patty Tarvin of Escondido, Calif., and Charles Tarvin of Sioux City; her grandchildren, Kristy Miedema and her husband, Jon of Chicago, Ill., and Jenny Peck and her husband, Mike of Escondido; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Bernice Baker, Alma Fitzgibbon, and Mary Cutsinger-White; and a brother, Charles Verlinden.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in Ruth's name should be made to Faith United Presbyterian Church or Siouxland Humane Society.
