Sioux City - Scott Leslie Johnson, 53, of Chapman, Kan., formerly of Sioux City, passed away and joined his parents in Heaven Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, in Chapman, from ALS.
Per his wishes, the body was cremated. Services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with Neil Peck officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Scott was born Jan. 6, 1959, in Killeen, Texas, the son of Robert and Sharon, while his dad was stationed at Fort Hood. The family moved back to Sioux City, where Scott attended Sioux City schools. He graduated from East High School in 1977.
Scott worked at St. Luke's Hospital before moving to the Fort Riley, Kan., area in 1988. He worked in the construction field.
Scott was an outgoing man with a wonderful smile. He enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers and cheering on Kansas State. He enjoyed NASCAR, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was his favorite driver.
Scott met Glenda Dixson in 2006 and she became his greatest love. While some people may have turned away from the challenges of ALS, Glenda remained by his side and ensured he was kept comfortable.
Even in his final days, Scott kept his sense of humor. He made sure his sisters and Glenda learned a life lesson or two. He wanted them to know it's not worth driving around to find the cheapest gas -- time is wasted doing it. He also said money should not be saved for the one special thing that someone never gets around to buying. Scott was aware of lost time. He said you can't get the time back so live life to its fullest now.
Survivors include his love, Glenda Dixson of Chapman; her children, Brandon and Brandi of Chapman; his sisters, Lori Johnson, Jana (Doug) Niebaum and Deb Johnson (Misty Browne), all of Sioux City; a niece and nephew, Ashella Johnson and Jacob Swenson, both of Sioux City; aunts and uncles, JoAnn Deming, Betty Deming, Jim (Alice) Johnson and Karen Vermilyea; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Robert Lee; and two uncles, Don Deming and Steve Vermilyea.
