Shane M. Reed

Shane Michael Reed of Sioux City, IA, passed away on February 2nd, 2025, at the age of 64.

A visitation will be 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel, 1801 Morningside Ave.

Shane was born in Sioux City, IA, on February 26, 1960, the son of Charles Reed and Glenna (Edwards) Brockhaus. He grew up in South Sioux City, NE, and graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1978. He married Tami (Brzuchalski) in 2006.

On September 21st, 1981, Shane was hired on to the Sioux City Fire Department. He retired in 2016, after 34 years, due to health reasons. The number of lives he not only touched, but also saved, during those 3 ½ decades is incalculable.

After retirement, he worked at Green Valley Golf Course. He was likely to be found on a mower, cutting the greens, or on a golf cart, playing 18 holes with his friends. Pace of play was very important to him. He did not enjoy golfing behind “the turtles” and would tell you exactly how he felt about them. His number one item on his bucket list was to play 18 holes at Pebble Beach, which he was able to do with his son in 2015.

The most important thing in Shane’s life was his family. He coached every sport imaginable for both his son and daughter while they were growing up, and he developed close relationships with all of their friends because of it. Shane could be found at every sporting event and all activities of his grandkids. He continued to line judge for his granddaughters’ volleyball games even while sick and on chemotherapy. He had a passion for dogs and cats. He enjoyed being a dog sitter for all of his grandpuppies who always enjoyed the treats he would bring. He was an avid fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Kansas City Chiefs. He enjoyed the ritual of watching playoff games with his son and daughter.

On May 5, 2024, Shane was made new and baptized at Sunnybrook Community Church. His faith became very important to him, and he attended weekly services with his daughter and her family, when his health allowed him to do so.

Shane is survived by his wife, Tami; children, Brandi Reed of Sioux City, Shauna (Adam) Oetken of Sioux City, Brent (Caitlin Cooper) Reed of Sioux Falls, Trey Chmelka of Sioux City, and Laiken (Casey) Seubert of Sioux City; grandchildren, Chasity and Chris Case, Jayana and Zyra Oetken, and Ava and Luke Seubert; his father-in-law, Dick Brzuchalski; a brother, Stan Reed; a sister-in-law, April Reed; a brother-in-law, Rick (Donna) Brzuchalski; and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles; his mother, Glenna; his step-father, Bill; and his brother, Scott.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the family for memorial designations to be determined at a later time.
