DAKOTA CITY -- Shawn M. Jessen, 28, of Omaha, formerly of Dakota City, died suddenly Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at his residence.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Mr. Jessen was born in Atlantic, Iowa, on Nov. 10, 1979. He moved with his parents to Dakota County in 1981. He attended Homer (Neb.) Public School and graduated in 1998 from Heelan Catholic High School in Sioux City. He received his bachelor of science degree in biology from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 2004. He was working on his mater's in biochemistry. He was employed as a microbiologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha in breast cancer research.
He was an avid bass fisherman throughout his childhood and as an adult. He was also active in the Dakota County 4-H as a horseman all through school. He was a staunch Nebraska Cornhuskers football fan.
He is survived by his parents, Leon and Janice of rural Dakota City; a brother, Scott of Sioux City; his paternal grandparents, Alfred and Margaret Jessen of Dakota City; his uncles and their wives, Rick and Karen Jessen of Yutan, Neb., and Randy and Kathy Jessen of rural Hubbard, Neb.; and his aunts, Jenise Jessen of Carlsbad, N.M., and Terry Jessen of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Paul & Winifred O'Connor and two uncles, Jim Jessen and John Jessen.
