Sheila Kathleen Peterson, 73, of Lawton, Iowa, formally of Sioux City, Iowa, died January 27, 2025, at Lawton Senior Living in Lawton, Iowa, after a lengthy battle with dementia.
Funeral services will be held on 10:30 AM, Friday, January 31, 2025, at Morningside Lutheran Church, 700 S. Martha St., with the Reverend Paul Peterson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Christy-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sheila was born February 5, 1951, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Dayrl Owen Newman and Della Mae (Hanson) Newman. She attended Sioux City Schools. While attending East High School she was a member of the East High Marching Band and graduated from East High in 1970. After high school Sheila worked for Sunrise Retirement Community, and the City of Sioux City in various departments. She retired from the City in 2004 after 29 ½ years of service. Following her retirement from the City, Sheila worked for MCI, and held other various office positions within the business sector for several more years.
She married Richard Carlton Peterson, on May 26, 1990, at Morningside Lutheran Church where she was a member and sang in the choir in her earlier years. Richard passed away on November 10, 2012. While they were married, she enjoyed spending time with him, which included their trips to Branson, Missouri, riding their motorcycle together, listening to Richard play country music with his band at local venues, and every now and then Sheila would sing with him and the band. Not having children of her own, she welcomed, and loved her new stepfamily, and relished the title of mom, grandmother, and great grandmother. She also loved her fur baby dachshunds through the years.
Survivors include stepchildren, step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren; sister, Sharon Harris of Waite Park, Minnesota; two brothers and their wives, Ray and Anne Newman, Michael and Sherry Newman all of Sioux City; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandparents, in-laws; stepdaughter, Elizabeth; stepson, Aaron; step-grandson, Dylan; great nephew, Zach.

A special thank you is also extended to the Hospice of the Midwest Care Team for their unwavering dedicated service to ensuring end of life care is compassionate and comfortable for their patients and caregivers.
