Shirley Jean DeMey (Christiansen)

SIOUX CITY -- Shirley Jean DeMey, 80, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009, at a local nursing home after battling cancer for the past two years.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with Pastors Russell Senstad and David Zirpel officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Monday in Dow City Cemetery, Dow City, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Shirley was born June 5, 1928, in the Kenwood, Iowa, area to Raymond R. and Sylvia A. (Samuelson) Christiansen. She grew up in the Kenwood area, later moved to Siouxland, and had been a resident here since 1950.

She married LeRoy DeMey on April 12, 1944, in Sioux City. He passed away July 30, 2007, in Sioux City. Shirley worked at Johnson Biscuit Company in Sioux City. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her children, Sharon Brandt of Delhart, Texas, Lanny and Mary DeMey of Denison, Iowa, Laurie Soule of Fort Worth, Texas, Lisa DeMey and fiance, Ramon Camacho of Sioux City, and Steven DeMey of Sioux City; 24 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy Varner of Sioux City, and Linda and Verle McCutcheon of Dow City, Iowa; three brothers, Gene and Carol Christiansen of Arion, Iowa, Gailen and Phyllis Christiansen of Sioux City, and Larry Christiansen of Sioux City; and a sister-in-law, Jonette DeMey of Sioux Falls, S.D.

She was preceded in death by a son, Roger; a brother, Lawrence Christiansen; sisters, Pauline Brown and Kathi Greeny; and two grandchildren, Christopher Brandt and Jessica Brandt.
