Shirley Joyce Stilwell (Stubbe)

LAWTON, Iowa -- Shirley J. Stilwell, 73, of Lawton died Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, with Lorna Peters, C.L.P. officiating. The body was cremated. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

Shirley was born Sept. 18, 1935, in George, Iowa, the daughter of Charles J. and Sophia (Ennenga) Stubbe. She was raised in George, where she graduated from George High School in 1953. She played on the six-girl basketball team for the George High School. She moved to the Hinton, Iowa, area in 1955.

She married Ronald R. Stilwell on Feb. 23, 1957, in George. The couple made their home in the Lawton area. She was employed as a bookkeeper for the Hinton Elevator, Robb Ross Company, Thompkins Construction, Donaldson Construction, Bomgaars and Kalin's Indoor Comfort Company, retiring in 2002.

She was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren's sporting events. The couple spent a lot of time at their cabin on the Missouri River and hosted wild game feeds. She enjoyed snowmobiling, boating and playing cards. With family and friends, she always had chips and salsa available, along with hot fudge and ice cream.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Stilwell of Lawton; three sons, Mick Stilwell and his wife, Becky of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Kelly Stilwell of Sarasota, Fla., and Kyle Stilwell and his wife, Cathy of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Rhonda and Blake Miller of Lawton; 10 grandchildren, Georgia and Natalie Stilwell, Melissa, Jason, Ryan and Anthony Stilwell, Skyler and Wyatt Stilwell and Roni and Dakota Miller; a brother and his wife, Henry and Jenny Stubbe of New Richmond, Ohio; a sister, Kathryn Habbinga of George, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Bexten of Columbus, Mo., and Gerri Stilwell of Tucson, Ariz.; and a brother-in-law, Jerry Stilwell of Lawton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Sophia Stubbe; a sister-in-law, Joyce Stilwell; three brothers-in-law, E.J. Bexten, Lewis Stilwell and Lawrence Habbinga; and her parents-in-law, Lester and Leatha Stilwell.
