Sidney R. "Sid" Knittel, 59, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, at a local hospital following a lengthy battle with COPD.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Valerie Heller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to

Sid was born Feb. 3, 1948, in Spencer, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Dorothea (Reimer) Knittel. He was raised in the Spencer and Milford area, graduating from Arnolds Park High School.
He married Jeanne Witt on Sept. 18, 1971, in Hartley, Iowa, and the couple moved to Sioux City about that time. Jeanne died on Oct. 25, 2003, in Sioux City. Sid had worked at Dynatech Corp. for a few years, was a nursing assistant at Matney's Morningside Manor for 11 years, and recently was employed at MCI in Sergeant Bluff for more than 10 years.
He helped form and was a member of the Castels Band for many years and was a well-known musician around this area. He will be inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in September 2008. Music was a big part of his life as he was an avid supporter of and attended Saturday in the Park each summer.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Michelle (Rick) Gunn of Sioux City; a son, Sean Knittel and his fiancee, Meg Kezerle of Sioux City; his mother, Dorothea Knittel of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Tony Gunn, Levi Gunn, Cody Gunn and Macean Gunn; his friend, Melinda Freyberger; two brothers, Steven Knittel of Spencer, Iowa, and Jim (Mary Jo) Knittel of Seattle, Wash.; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father and his wife.
A memorial has been established in his name in care of the family.
