JEFFERSON, S.D. -- Stephen Michael Fleck, 64, of Jefferson died June 13,2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes in Sioux City. Burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date. Visitation with the family will be 6 p.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to

Stephen was born Jan. 17, 1947, in Sioux City, the son of Vernon F. and Phyllis E. (Manzer) Fleck. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Heelan High School in 1965. He entered the U.S. Army in May 1966 and served until March 1968. Following his time in the military, he went to work for Gibbson Store in Sioux City and Wayne, Neb. He then moved to Denver, Colo., were he graduated from a refrigeration school in 1978. He lived and worked in the Denver area for 13 years, before returning to the Siouxland area.
He married Barbara J. Peck on Oct. 29,1986 in Las Vegas, Nev. They made their home in South Sioux City from 1986 to 1995, when they moved to Jefferson. He was employed as a maintenance mechanic and electrician at Interbake Foods for 18 years, retiring in 2009.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union, was an avid NASCAR fan, and follower of Jimmy Johnson. He was also a Denver Bronco's supporter and a fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping and playing cards, especially Pinochle. Music was his passion, he played a 12 string guitar, and rhythm and bass. He played and sang with a number of groups from his teenage years. He was inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the Mustang Band in 2005. He enjoyed spending time with his family and said that he just enjoyed the simple life.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Barb, of Jefferson; his father, Vernon F. Fleck, of Sioux City; his brother, Larry Fleck and his wife, Janet, of Regal, Minn.; three sisters, Sherry Heimbecker and her significant other, Kendall Nielsen, both of Sioux City, Linda Mullins and her husband, Duane of South Sioux City, and Donna Krupke of New London, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother; a brother-in-law, Phil Heimbecker; and his mother-in-law, Mary Peck.
