SIOUX CITY -- Stephen Lee Verdoorn Sr. of Dumas, Texas, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 2010.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery, Jefferson, S.D. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Stephen was born Jan. 9, 1952, in Sioux City, to Maynard and Irene (George) Verdoorn Sr. He grew up in the Sioux City area. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1974. He had been a resident of Dumas since 1996.
He married Cindy Kinikin in Dumas on June 15, 2000. He was employed with IBP in Dakota City and Grand Island, Neb. and the Ingels Shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss. He also was a maintenance superintendent for the Swift Tannery for 17 years.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy of Dumas; daughters, Jamie Winkel and Teri and Chris Winkel, all of Sioux City; a son, Stephen L. Verdoorn Jr. of Grand Bay, Ala.; stepchildren, Courtney and Jesse Vara, Amy Galvan of Amarillo, Texas, Byron and Jesse Floyd of Fritch, Texas, and Demetrio B. and Monica Galvan of Amarillo; 25 grandchildren; brothers, Clarence "Peanut" and Rosie Verdoorn of North Sioux City, M. John Verdoorn of North Sioux City, Joe and Brenda Verdoorn of Sergeant Bluff, Frank and Kathy Verdoorn of North Sioux City and Eugene and Kelly Verdoorn of Sergeant Bluff; and sisters, Donna and Robert Keairns Sr. of Sioux City, Judy Sisk of Portland, Ore., Laura Libby of North Sioux City, Carin and Steve Stricker of Blue Springs, Mo., Mary and Bugs Worden of Sioux City, Debra Johns of North Sioux City, and Kristie and Doug MacGregor of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brothers, David and Carl Verdoorn; a sister, Teresa Verdoorn; a nephew, Tony Verdoorn; and a niece, Rebecca Peterson.
