Sioux City, IA – Steven D. Bonstead, 73, of Sioux City, IA, died Friday, November 4, 2022, at a local hospital in Sioux City, IA.
A Memorial Mass will be 10:30 am Saturday, November 12, 2022, at Holy Cross Parish-St. Michael Catholic Church. A visitation will be 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday, November 11, 2022, at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Larkin Chapel, 2320 Outer Drive N., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm. Steve was born in Estherville, IA on March 16, 1949, to Gerald Oliver and Inez Leora Bonstead. He was raised on a small farm in Wallingford, IA, the youngest of six children. He had three brothers, Paul, Gary and Ronnie, and two sisters, Ione Slingerland and Shirley Nelson.
He attended Graettinger High School where he played Football, Basketball, Baseball and Golf. After graduation he attended Great Lakes Community College before transferring to The University of Iowa where he received a degree in History with a Minor in Mathematics. His love for the Hawkeyes started at a young age watching his brother, Paul, play baseball there and continued to his last day.
After college, he returned to Estherville where he started working in the office for local implement.
In 1972 he met his wife, Cathleen, and they were married June 15, 1973.
Over the next decade, they became parents of three sons: Kyle Christopher, Kellon Michael, and Kurtis Steven.
In 1979, he started working in the office for John Morrell handling most accounting duties. After three years there, he was transferred to the Sioux City Office. He spent over 25 years at John Morrell ending as the company’s Controller.
With the transfer to Sioux City, the family moved from Estherville to Sioux City where they would remain until his death.
Steve was a member of Nativity and St. Michaels Parish. He took an active role in Men’s Club as well as routinely distributing communion. He attended many Search retreats and sponsored candidates through the RCIA program and couples in pre-marriage preparation.
Steve coached youth sports for all three of his boys in both baseball and soccer. His love and passion of sports was always enjoyed by the boys he coached.
Steve’s favorite hobbies were golfing with his sons, playing cards with his wife at card club and spending time with his family and friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents and his 5 siblings. His memory will be cherished by his son, Kyle Bonstead, and grandchildren Keegan, Breckan and Creighton; his son, Kellon Bonstead; his son, Kurtis Bonstead, wife Erin, and grandchildren Quinnlyn and Ayse; and 34 nieces and nephews of three generations.
