Sioux City - Thelma Hanson, 88, of Sioux City passed away Jan. 7, 2014, after a brief battle with cancer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Thelma was born on Nov. 28, 1925, in Beech, Iowa, to Claude and Hazel (Lukenbill) Bush. She graduated from St. Mary’s Iowa School in 1943 as valedictorian and then attended American Institute of Business in Des Moines. Thelma worked at Meredith Corporation and the U.S. Army in Des Moines. She then worked at Wilson Trailer, the Sioux City Stockyards and U.S. Department of Agriculture until retiring in 1987. After retirement, she was employed at Greenville Pharmacy for eight years.
She married Clarion Hanson on Feb. 3, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 21, 1983. Thelma and her family resided in Sioux City until moving to Sergeant Bluff in 1965 and she lived there until 1989.
Thelma enjoyed sewing, walking, gardening, genealogy, and especially spending time with her extended family. She was a member of Sergeant Bluff American Legion Auxiliary, a 60-year member of Morningside Lutheran Church, where she was involved with the Morning Glories quilters, and a longtime member and volunteer at Christy-Smith Step Beyond Program.
Survivors include her daughters, Roxanne (Stephen) Gould of Sergeant Bluff, and Rhonda (Daniel) Waller of Des Moines, and Renee (Ken) Gestel, Livonia, Mo.; sons, Richard (Gail) Hanson of Iowa City, Iowa, Roger Hanson of Fredericksburg, Va., and Ronald (Amie) Hanson of Sergeant Bluff; grandchildren, Andrew (Courtney) Gould, Elizabeth Gould, Matthew Waller, Mark Waller, Karen (Steve) Meinecke, Brett Hanson, Justin Hanson, Jonathon Hanson, and Tyler Hanson; great-grandchildren, Jamison, Jonathon, Nathaniel, Serina, Gabriel, Ethan, Levi, and Grayson; many special nieces and nephews; and her Countryside Four Seasons family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Merrill; and great-granddaughter, Isabelle Grace Gould.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Siouxland or Morningside Lutheran Church Morning Glories.
