SIOUX CITY -- Theresa M. "Terry" Hafits, 83, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel C. Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to

Terry was born Oct. 7, 1927, in Sioux City, the daughter of Edward J. and Theresa M. (O'Keefe) Whelan. She was lifelong resident of Sioux City. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1945, where she was an accomplished vocalist. She was employed at the Sioux City Air Base as a secretary following her high school graduation.
She married Donald H. Hafits on July 8, 1946, in Sioux City. After raising her family, she worked at Northwest Area Education Association for 15 years, retiring in 1992. Don died on April 5, 1998, in Sioux City.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she enjoyed being a proud member of the church choir with many of her friends. She loved to sing and enjoyed almost any kind of music. In her younger years, she was an excellent bowler. She also enjoyed working in her yard and was an avid bingo player.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Hanson and her husband, Jack of Le Mars, Iowa, and Theresa Card of Sioux City; two sons, Jerry Hafits of Sioux City, and Dan Hafits and his wife, Lo-Ann of Omaha; nine grandchildren, Lisa, Lora, Kristy, Carrie, Megan, Mike, Dan, Alisha and Amanda; and seven great-grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Kalleigh, Natalie, Thomas, Jalen and Auriana.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers; and four sisters.
Pallbearers will be Mike Card, Dan Donahoe, Michael Lamoreux, Matthew Rajnowski, Tommy Saffell, Lee Sasser and Mike Clem.
