SERGEANT BLUFF -- Thomas "Tom" Lambert, 75, of Sergeant Bluff, formerly of Carroll, Iowa, passed away Friday, July 4, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital, following a courageous, year-long battle with cancer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, 1801 Morningside Ave. Online condolences may be sent to

Thomas Joseph Lambert was born on May 15, 1933, in Carroll, Iowa, to John and Arlowine (Arts) Lambert. Tom graduated from Carroll High School with the class of 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 1952 until May 1956, serving on the USS Princeton.
Tom and Shirley Ann Kooyman were married on Sept. 25, 1956, in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple moved from Carroll in 1977 to Sloan, Iowa, and then Sergeant Bluff in 1985. Tom worked for Iowa Public Service (later became Midwest Energy) in Carroll and continued to work for them after moving to Sloan and Sergeant Bluff. He worked as a shift supervisor at Port Neal South. After his retirement from Midwest Energy, Tom volunteered for the Red Cross, working in mass care and communications. His assignments included locations in Pensacola, Fla., New York City, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, North Central Iowa, Wilmington, N.C., the Black Hills, Texas, and his final assignment was at the Pentagon after the September 11 attack.
Tom's hobbies included ham radio operator, philatelist (stamp collecting) of U.N. stamps, fishing in Alaska with his grandsons and cooking. He was a member of the Elks and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Sergeant Bluff; daughters, Kathryn Dunagan of Soldotna, Alaska, Denise and Steve Edwards of Plattsmouth, Neb., Jacquline and Tom Bakker of Sioux City, Christine and Wes Crum of Smartville, Calif., and Patricia Plantenberg of Sergeant Bluff; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Charlotte and Don Hagadorn of Carroll, Deb and Larry Agee of Mechanicsville, Va., Robert and Carmen Jenkins of Deerfield, Wis., Richard and Donna Jenkins of Olive Branch, Miss., and Kevin and Margie Jenkins of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Jacquline Maystadt.
