Tom was born July 20, 1940, in Yankton, S.D., to Walter and Lillian (Nohava) Lane. He grew up and attended school in the Yankton area. He moved to the North Sioux City area about 25 years ago and had been a resident here ever since. His lifelong occupation consisted of construction and farming. He was baptized in the Episcopal faith.
Tom's passion for life was the time spent hunting, fishing, trapping and farming; yet always having time to spend with his sons and daughters. He very much enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, taking them for rides on the 4-wheelers and just spending time outside on the farm. In between these times, you would find dad visiting on the phone with his closest brother-in-law, Buster and favorite nieces, Angie and Becky. Soon another grandchild is due in the family to carry his name on further in life. This news put another big smile on his face and he could not wait for the baby to be born. Tom was not much for words but you knew if he liked you, you were loved.
Survivors include his children, Sandra and Craig Jaton of Irene, S.D., Kristine and Gary Huchtmeier of Yankton, S.D., Trin & Libni Lane of North Sioux City, S.D., Andrew Lane of North Sioux City, S.D., Allen Lane of Nebraska, Tina Mendoza of Norfolk, Neb., and Tonya Vetter of Huron, S.D.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, JoAnn and Terry List of Yankton; a brother-in-law, Buster Keegan of Lawton, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Jimmy Lane; and sisters, Betty Keegan, Susan Anderson and Barbara Lane.
